Another Day in Paradise (Day Seven)

I woke up cold this morning, but not hammock-tent cold. There didn’t seem to be any way for me to turn on the heat in my motel room. I was on the road by 6:30, and pulled in to the Maine Diner in Wells just as they opened at 7:00. There was already a line. This place was featured on Diners, Drive-ins & Dives, and I think I may have seen that episode. I asked a lady in line for a breakfast recommendation, and she said “Everything here is good.” I had a huge blueberry pancake with 2 eggs. It was super yummy.

Got back on the road. It was pretty chilly riding today, and I kept my Turtle Fur on for most of the day. Unfortunately, I don’t have that many cold-weather biking clothes, so I keep wearing my Patriots jersey and it’s not doing a great job. I took the left turn off of Route 1 that takes you down to Wells Beach and Moody Beach. I was so excited to see the ocean (something I don’t get to see much). This area looked VASTLY different from the last time I was here because it was the middle of summer then. Cars everywhere. Today, it was pretty empty. But there were some people there, and they were all looking at the ocean with their phones and binoculars. I figured they were just looking at the ocean... A woman sat down next to me and asked, “How long has that been out there?” I replied, “How long has what been out there?” She said, “The whale!” There was a whale, fairly close to shore, just frolicking about for all to see. It was so cool. I watched him (or her) for a while and then headed to Moody Beach, where there were even fewer people. I love watching the waves come crashing in. It’s so soothing.

I headed back to Route 1, and then the route took me to Shore Road which goes through Ogunquit. The houses are so beautiful, and the ocean was so beautiful. This was my favorite part of the trip last time. By the time I got to York, I was getting pretty hungry, but since it was Mother’s Day, it was hard to find a place that didn’t require reservations. In York, I noticed a few cars pulled over and people were staring at something. I pulled over, and there was a huge bald eagle high up in a tree. Just sitting there staring at us. I’d say a whale and a bald eagle in one day is a pretty good day! I found a place to stay in Kittery, and had a mediocre lunch at Rudders Public House. Got to watch the Red Sox for a while though. I should have gone to Warren’s, and that’s where I ended up for my last dinner in Maine. It was good, but I was a little lonely, sitting there by myself.

30 miles today. Hoping to make it to East Derry tomorrow.
