Oh yes, it’s time to celebrate, my friends. I made it to Boston. 354 miles on my bike. I am SO ready for a break, and I’m so grateful to my friend, Jason, for helping me have some time off from the bike seat.
I left Nashua yesterday morning, much later than I usually do. I was feeling pretty tired, and the bed was so comfortable. Usually I’m on the road at 6:30, but yesterday, I hit the road at 10:00. It was a beautiful morning, after the downpours from the night before, and I made my way to the Nashua River Rail Trail, which was a few miles from the hotel. I absolutely adore rail trails. Support your local rail trail! Donate money, donate time for trail maintenance, or just ride it! It’s there for you to enjoy. This trail goes from Nashua to Ayer, Massachusetts. I made pretty good time, and stopped for a quick lunch at a little place in Ayer called The Cottage. I made a phone call to my grandmother. My route takes me right past her house, where I have so many happy memories. Sadly, she no longer lives there, but she’s doing great. She turns 92 this month. Happy Birthday, Gramma! I love you!
I then got back on my route, to the “Boston Spur” which takes me to Alewife Station, by way of the Minuteman Trail. It took me quite a while to get to this trail, and I was getting pretty tired. I stopped repeatedly for water breaks. Getting from Concord to Bedford was tricky because the traffic had picked up, and there wasn’t much of a shoulder. I finally made it to the Minuteman Trail. One last bit, and I get to take a break! Jason had gotten there a little early, and I felt bad for making him wait, so I gathered my last remaining supply of energy, and pushed it hard. I think I averaged about 15 mph. A beer has never tasted so good as the one I had when I got to Alewife. I left my bike in the cage (which is so cool). Hopefully, it will be safe till I go back to get it on Monday.
We threw my trailer in the back of Jason’s car, stopped at the grocery store, and then I was off to bed. Went for a lovely swim at his gym this morning, and I’m feeling really good. I’m nervous about Connecticut, since I remember it as being hill after arduous hill, but I think I’m in good shape for it. The next leg of this trip is going to be hard on me, since I’ll really be out there on my own, and I’m sure I’ll be dealing with loneliness. I’m going to enjoy my few days off in Boston, and look forward to my upcoming adventures.
