Yesterday started out well, with good weather and a whole lot of downhill runs on the way to Stafford Springs. But I just haven’t been feeling the love here in Connecticut. I pushed off from the motel in Ashford, and waved good-bye to one of the owners. Headed down the road, and said “Good morning” to a couple that had just put all their kids on the bus. They did not reply - just began screaming for their dog. The little dog thought I was interesting and was trotting after me. I went by the bait shop and waved goodbye to Moose. Riding with no food or coffee in me was tough, so when I got to Stafford Springs, I stopped at a coffee shop for a bagel sandwich and coffee. The coffee was good, but the bagel left me a little cold. I met a nice man outside the shop, and he asked about my ride, and I gave him one of my cards. He texted me later on that there was a hardware store in Ellington, but I decided to push on. I’m a little worried about the bands that hold my trailer shut. They’re showing signs of wear. Next time I see a bike shop, I’ll stop.
I passed a few bikers on the way to Ellington, but most of them pretended they didn’t see me. One said hi. One asked if I had a “little one” in my trailer, and I chuckled. When I got to Ellington, I stopped at the post office for some shade, and I noticed that Gramma had called, so I called her back and we chatted for a while. A couple of people walking by checked to see if I was OK. It was just about lunchtime, and there was a place called the Chuck Wagon, but I wasn’t really hungry yet. I got back on my bike, but couldn’t find the road to Windsor Locks. A biker approached me, and I showed him my map, but he didn’t recognize any of the roads on my route. He said he lived in Windsor Locks, and he gave me some directions. We chatted for a while, and he said I should follow him, and he’d get me going in the right direction. He took off and promptly disappeared. I was completely off my route, so I Google mapped it, and took 140 all the way to Windsor Locks, and my free hotel for the night (thanks Hotels.com!) It was really hot, and I was so grateful to get out of the sun. I had cleverly wrapped up the remainder of my dinner, so I microwaved it for lunch. I put my clothes in the washer, and headed over to the hotel down the street for a drink. I ended up hanging out there for a while, and the place was busy, but no one seemed interested in talking to me. I went back to my room to watch the Red Sox.
Not sure how far I’ll make it today. This is all new territory from here. I hope to make it to New York on Friday. Wish me luck!
