Good morning! I’m back on the road after taking a few days off in Boston. It did wonders for me, as I really needed a break. I went to the gym twice, and got to hang out with some dear friends. Went to Harvard Square and just walked around, soaking it all in. I also printed some more of my blog cards, since I ran out of them so fast! I have a good supply now. I also picked up some new biking shoes (since mine completely fell apart) and I really like them. Chuck came down yesterday to spend some time with me before I head south again, and we had a lovely time together. It was sad to say goodbye again.
Today was one of the few times I’ll be able to say I biked through three states in one day. I need to do a better job of planning though. Chuck picked me up in Boston yesterday, and we went to pick up my bike at Alewife, but we couldn’t get into the bike cage, because my Charlie card had expired. It took forever to find someone to let us in. I gave the lady a hug when she did.
I had planned to sleep in my tent in Thompson, Connecticut tonight. After breakfast at the hotel (do-it-yourself waffle), Chuck dropped me off in Westborough. Biking through that section of Massachusetts was really nice. It was warm when I started, with a slight breeze. I stopped at a food truck in Whitinsville for lunch. I saw Italian sausage on the menu, which I love, but he was out of it. I had a cheeseburger, which was not great, but it did the trick. I crossed the border into Rhode Island after riding quite a few hills. It was starting to get really hot too. I stopped at a convenience store for a cold orange juice. About 2 miles from the Connecticut border is when I really started to have trouble. I had done over 30 miles of tough riding, and I didn’t feel like I could do any more.
I pulled over at the side of the road a few times, whenever I saw some shade. I climbed the last hill into Thompson, and knew I couldn’t make it to the campground, so I stopped at a B&B. They were super nice and drove me to the store to get something for dinner. I’m going to have to plan each day a little better, so I don’t feel like I’m going to die! The heat today really got to me, and this area has a lot of hills. Tomorrow I’m planning to make it to Union, which was actually my stopping point last time I did this ride. It’ll be interesting to see what lies beyond Union! I’ll just try to plan my days a little better.
Enjoying your blog katy and seems like you're moving along nicely. Getting past the New England/NY metro area will be the first big hump of your trip imo and it's all down hill from there (sure it is). Looks like some nice weather ahead into the weekend, just stay hydrated and you should put some good miles behind you. Be safe and the best your way! Gary
