Georgia on My Mind (Day Forty-six)

Three 55-mile days in a row are starting to take their toll. I’m glad I have an easier day tomorrow. I started with the complimentary breakfast as soon as they opened, and made myself a bagel with egg and sausage. Got caught up on the news, and then went back to my room to pack up. I looked at my map, and they actually had a warning for today: “Between Conway and Yauhannah, US 701 has no shoulder and moderate to heavy amounts of traffic, including trucks. Be very cautious while riding this stretch.” That made me nervous, but I did what I usually do. I kept an eye on my mirror and made sure I was not in anyone’s way.

Made it to Yauhannah unscathed. There was one annoyance, however. Construction on 701 completely eliminated the teeny shoulder for 2 miles. One driver decided he was being helpful by refusing to pass me, so a long line of traffic behind him had to wait for me to ride through the entire construction zone. I really don’t appreciate that because it pisses off the drivers and puts me under pressure to ride fast. I did the best I could, and got off the road to let everyone go by. Stopped for a banana and some water. This heat has me taking more breaks.

I took the turn onto 261, and was chased by a dog. I had to get up to 20 mph to get away from him.  I rode on to Pleasant Hill. Picked up some more water, and continued on to Rhems, which was my lunch stop. A gas station had a little cafe in it, and although the fried chicken seemed insanely popular there (everyone was ordering it), I decided fried food wouldn’t be a good idea. I ordered a grilled chicken sandwich with lettuce and tomato, and it really hit the spot. I chatted with the lady who made it for me and told her about my bike ride. She said she was originally from Georgia, and I told her I couldn’t wait to get there. South Carolina has left me a little flat.

I arrived in Andrews and checked in and got myself cleaned up. I rode my bike downtown, since it was a few blocks away and very hot out. I decided on an Italian restaurant (the only other option was Chinese), and I had a pretty good sandwich. I stopped at the store for some more water on my way back. Watched some TV and went to bed. I’ll be riding into Georgia on the 4th of July, and I’m looking forward to that. When I get to Florida, it looks like I’ll have a place to stay in St. Augustine, and I’m hoping to take a day off while I’m there. Can’t wait!!
