So much to report today. I called the local police as soon as I got up and left a message to see if anyone had picked up my bike jacket, but they never called me back. I started the day with a pretty decent breakfast at Cracker Barrel and then hopped on the Schuykill River Trail (pronounced “skookle”). It was absolutely gorgeous, and I saw tons of groundhogs running around. Some just sat there as I rode right past them. The trail was wide and well maintained, and empty! The river was right next to it. At one point I almost took a wrong turn and headed towards Philadelphia, but I caught myself.
After a while, my map told me to take the Joseph Plumb Martin Trail which goes straight through Valley Forge National Historical Park. That was cool, but I got hopelessly lost in the Park, since there are many connecting trails. I was pretty frustrated. I called Chuck and he helped me get out, but I was completely off my route. I had 50 miles to ride, and there was no way I was going to make it. I switched to Google Map directions, which took me to a nice bike trail. The trail was crowded, but at one point, I had to do a double take. I had just ridden past a deer, and it was so close I could have touched it. It was not afraid of people at all.
I ended up in Downington, and went into a bike shop to see if there was a motel nearby. I had ridden 36 miles, and there was just no way I could go another 25 to make it to New Holland. Luckily, there was a place just a mile down the road. It was nice and cozy, and I was relieved. Unfortunately, I had forgotten to put sunscreen on, and my arms got it pretty bad. I’ll plan on New Holland tomorrow. I’m just three map sections away from Maryland! Woo hoo!!!
