Invincible (Day Twenty-six)

Today was one of those incredible days that makes you feel like you can do anything. I had the best riding of this trip so far, and saw some really cool stuff. I started with a so-so breakfast, but enjoyed the conversation with the two brothers next to me. (My omelet was cold and not very good.)

The weather was perfect, so I got my stuff together as quickly as I could. Most of my ACA route today coincided with the BicyclePA Route, which was nice. I started out going through 10 miles of absolutely lovely (and flat) farmland. The road was in great shape, with very little traffic and every once in a while, one of the Amish horse-drawn buggies would go by, and the occupants would smile and wave. I loved going by all the animals (horses, cows and sheep), and they seemed fairly interested in me.

Lancaster was next, and I had a little bit of trouble there. Ended up on the wrong road, trying to find 462 West, but a police officer helped me, and eventually I got going the right way. I reached Mountville around noon, and I was hungry, but not feeling too good after that omelet. I had a salad and some iced tea, and felt much better after that. I was ready to put on some more miles and get to York. 462 was nice. Not too hilly, and I think the wind may have been at my back so I was sailing along. I’d go 20 mph on the straightaways and about 8 mph on the hills. There was a lot of truck traffic, but they were cool.

There’s a beautiful (and long) bridge that goes over the Susquehanna River into Wrightsville. There was no sidewalk on my side, but I had enough room to ride in the lane and check out the scenery. Pennsylvania is so beautiful! Who knew?

I made it to York and got settled. Had a very good dinner at a funky place called the White Rose. My waitress, Heather, was very sweet and helped me deal with the loneliness of dining alone. They had some good specials, so the bill wasn’t bad at all, and I enjoyed everything. I highly recommend that place, and York just has a nice vibe to it. I wouldn’t mind coming back here someday.

I’m proud of myself for the riding I did today. I went 40 miles in exactly 4 hours. I have a lot of miles to put on tomorrow (57), due to a lack of services on the route, but a lot of those are trail miles, so hopefully it won’t be too bad. I’ll say goodbye to Pennsylvania and hello to Maryland tomorrow.
