Mistakes...I’ve made a few. I’m feeling pretty down as I write this, but I’ll give it a try. I put on a lot of miles today: 45 to be precise. I left the campsite early, managing to get everything stuffed in its respective stuff sack. Sailed easily down to 209 and stopped at the market for a breakfast sandwich and a coffee. I enjoyed the conversation with some of the locals. They had some good stories. Unfortunately, one woman had just had a fire on her property, but her house was OK. Her shed was destroyed.
I got back on the road after giving my trailer tires a little air. Traffic was light, and the weather was comfortable. At one point, I stopped under a bridge for some shade and to make a phone call. I was talking on the phone, and I turned around and couldn’t believe what I was seeing. A small bear was standing in the road, maybe 50 feet from me. He seemed as surprised as I was, and took off before I could get a picture. It was so cool.
The Delaware Water Gap National Recreation Area is absolutely beautiful, and I loved riding through it. Once in a while, a car would pass by and they waved. At one point, my chain fell off, and a car stopped to help. The woman’s name was Kathy Green and she offered a welcome alternative to my map. I crossed the Dingman’s Ferry Bridge and tried to pay the toll, but they wouldn’t take it because I was on a bike.
I made my way to Route 209, which would take me to my motel at Delaware Water Gap. I should have stuck to that plan. I decided to cancel the reservation at Delaware Water Gap, and ended up at a motel that I should have passed by. And Delaware Water Gap is COOL. Oh well. Next time! I had a decent sandwich in the tavern and one of the nice guys at the bar bought me a beer. It was raining steadily, so I was happy to be inside. Meeting my new friend, Gary, in Phillipsburg tomorrow.
