Today was the most riding I’ve done in a single day for almost a week, and it was really hot. It was no problem. I was on Route 1 for almost the entire day, and for the most part, I had a nice bike lane. I listened to my music today, since the traffic was light and I got an early start at 8:00. I think the music really helped, and I just love to ride and sing along. I sang loudly when I thought no one could hear me. It felt really good.
The North Brevard Rail Trail was not on my map, since apparently it just opened this year. I was riding down Route 1, frustrated with the road conditions, because there was construction going on. I heard a motor running to my right, and a man on an electric bike went flying by, down a bike path, and he looked at me quizzically. Probably wondering why I was biking on the road and not the trail. And probably wondering why I don’t have an electric bike... I moved to the path and remedied the situation, and it was wonderful.
I turned up my music and rode with no hands for a while. I noticed a woman walking her bike on the path, and she looked like she was struggling, so I stopped to see if she was OK. She said she was having problems with her bike. I asked if she needed to use my phone, but she said her husband was coming to pick her up. But she looked really overheated. She said she had suffered heat stroke in another city a while ago. I had a cold bottle of water in my bike bag that I had just purchased, and I offered it to her. She happily accepted. We chatted for a bit, and I rode off. There was a store about a half mile down the path, so I stopped and bought another water. The path continued, but I had to get off of it to stay on my route. It had been a nice break from Route 1!
When I got a little further down the road, I took some shelter from the sun in a bank drive-thru (the bank was closed). I had a Kind bar and finished one of my waters. I lay down on the pavement for a while and just stared at the sky. I’ve been struggling with bug bites since Daytona. They itch like crazy, and I’m trying not to scratch, but I’m afraid I gave in to temptation last night, and now my bites are really bad. The bugs here are vicious, and they kept biting me while I was riding down John Anderson Road. I’ve got some stuff on the bites now, and I’m hoping they’ll heal quickly.
I have 40 miles to ride tomorrow to get to Melbourne, and I haven’t been to a Waffle House in quite a while. Hmmm....I think there’s one down the street. Waffles make good biker fuel. Cheers!
