I Know There’s a Word for This (Day Fifty-four)

Wow - things are getting crazy. I just realized that I know a bunch of people who live in Florida, and I’d like to see them all, but coordinating it is getting really complicated. You’d think I would have set this up by now, wouldn’t you?

Today was a tough day. I only rode on one highway for the whole day, and I think that’s the first time that has happened. But it was 55 miles, without much change in the scenery, and it got a little monotonous. Plus, there was no cloud cover or shade, so I was baking in the sun and had to stop quite a few times. I realized I had inadvertently made it back to my route, but they took me off of 301 before Folkston (probably because of the monotony). I was not prepared to follow that route because it would have added extra miles, and I was already doing 55, which is my limit. So I stayed on 301. I witnessed lots of herons flying around today. They’re so graceful.

The road was fine until I got to Folkston. Don’t get me started on rumble strips... Riding to the motel in Folkston, I was beeped at quite a few times. They have a nice, wide, three-foot shoulder here. It is completely taken up by a giant rumble strip. If you’re anywhere in the shoulder, you’re on the strip, and I refuse to ride on that. I was in the road, and people did not like it. I think they might not have been aware of the reason, but I don’t know. I just had to take my chances. No one hit me, so I’m still here to blog about it.

I arrived at the hotel at 12:30, and was bothered, bushed and bedraggled. They let me check in, and I drowned my sorrows in the pool. I had to remove a bug the size of a large mouse first, but then I had a lovely swim. I went down the street for lunch, and once again lucked out with the weather. The past few days have delivered torrential rainstorms that always seem to happen after I have reached my destination. Yay!! I ate my fried chicken (I know, I know) and salad and waited out the storm. Walked back to the motel and spent the next two hours trying to plan my ride through Florida. I’m still not done, since one of the places I want to stay at was just hit by lightning. They’re going to call me back. Wish me luck! Can’t wait to get to Florida tomorrow.
