Let’s Go Crazy (Day Sixty-five)

I’m so grateful to Debbie at the Old Colorado Inn in Stuart, Florida for making it possible to me to continue my ride today and make it to Palm Beach. I couldn’t have done it without her help. I waited till 7:30 this morning, after going for a walk on the boardwalk and watching fish jump out of the water to catch buggies. Can I just say, everyone in Stuart seems so happy! They really love living there, and I can see why. It’s a beautiful town, and supposedly the fishing’s really good. I can’t wait to come back and give it a try.

Anyway, at 7:30, a sweet lady handed me a bag with a yummy bagel, some fruit and a cold bottle of orange juice. I toasted my bagel up and made another cup of coffee and enjoyed my breakfast. I hated to leave, but other adventures await! I had a heck of a time getting out of town, because Google Maps kept trying to send me down the road where I got my flat, and there was no way I was going through that again!

I finally found Route 1 and headed south, towards Jupiter. A man at the bar had suggested a place for lunch called the Square Grouper. I had passed it, so I had to backtrack a bit. I was less than impressed. The “greeters” at the door were not very friendly, and when I asked for a burger medium rare, the bartender said “It’ll be well done.” Not what I wanted. I had a fish sandwich and it was good, but I won’t be back there. I continued on, but the wind was right in my face and it really slowed me down. I wanted to enjoy the views of the ocean and the beautiful towns, but it’s hard when you’re so hot and tired and you just want to get where you’re going.

My water stayed very cold today, which was nice. I went through a lot of it. I ended up going 50 miles today, which took me almost 5 1/2 hours on the bike. When I arrived in Palm Beach, the nice lady at the motel gave me a water and told me to relax and take my time. I was seriously overheated and felt like I might pass out. I composed myself and checked in. This place is beautiful, and I looked out my back window and saw a huge iguana! Apparently that’s no big deal around here, and people just coexist with them. They mind their own business, I guess! A lightning storm sprang up and it was pretty cool, but didn’t last long. I kept trying to get a video of the lightning, but it wouldn’t cooperate.

I have another long day tomorrow, to get to Hollywood (hooray for Hollywood), and then it’s MIAMI and I get to take a day off. Can’t wait to see Jason and explore Miami. We have so much fun together. Best friends forever. A lady at dinner tonight kept calling me crazy, but I wasn’t offended, and I don’t think she meant it as an insult. I think we all need to have a little craziness in us. It makes life interesting and fun. I’m gonna be a little crazier after this ride, and that’s a good thing.

  1. Just did driving directions and from Stuart to Key West you’re about 36 hours by bike? So you think you’ll be there in a week if you’re doing 5 hours, or so, a day? - Kaitlyn Dorey
