Pedal Your Blues Away (Day Fifty-two)

I know...two blog entries in a row with the word “Blues” in the title. I think I’m just anxious to get to Florida now. And the riding lately hasn’t been all that interesting. I’m also having a really hard time finding things to eat around here. I can’t live on fried chicken and McDonald’s, and that seems to be the only options. Last night, I got a salad from Dairy Queen and brought it back to the motel.

I was happy to be back on my route today, from Statesboro to Reidsville, but I’m going off it again tomorrow. Using Google Maps while I’m riding really drains my phone battery, and there aren’t a lot of places to recharge it. I started with a pretty awful breakfast (I know there’s lots of good food in Georgia; I just haven’t been finding it) and was on the road by 9:00. It was hot and sunny, so I slathered on the sunscreen. I made my way through downtown Statesboro, which definitely looked like it had some good restaurants. I’d love to come back here and explore it. I rode past the most beautiful golf course I’ve ever seen, on my way out of town. I didn’t really have to deal with much traffic today, which was nice.

Unfortunately, my water bottles never froze last night, so I drank hot water today. I felt strong and actually rode up a hill at 12 mph today! I stopped for a water refill at a convenience store, and a group of people gathered around me. I joked around with them (one of them asked me for a ride), and they went inside, talking about me as they went.  As I approached Reidsville, I saw ominous-looking dark clouds, but the rain held off until I checked in. Then the sky opened up and it started pouring. The manager said it happens like that every afternoon. I went next door for lunch, and had fried chicken. The lady at the counter seemed very annoyed with me because I didn’t know the procedure and hadn’t grabbed a tray for my plate. Oh well.

I noticed there was a state park nearby, so I biked down to check it out. It was lovely, and a group of people were cooling off in some sprinklers. There was a mini golf course that looked neglected, and a small lake. I sat on a swing for a while and stared at the water. It was nice.

I have a lot of miles planned for the next few days, so I’ll need to get an early start. Gotta watch out for those afternoon storms!
