I was a little worried that a 57-mile day would be rough after two easy days, but there was no problem. I rode through the rain for most of the way today, but it was just a light rain and I didn’t mind it. I got an early start and considered going to Waffle House again, but I need to save my money. I had a little bit to eat at the hotel and then hit the road.
Today is the 4th of July, and I should get to see some fireworks in Statesboro. I started today with Google Map directions, since Ridgeland is not on my route, but they met up with my ACA directions soon enough. The black flies were especially bad today, and I was chased by a few dogs. One owner actually drove over to apologize to me. I had stopped for a moment, after being chased, to chat with a friendly biker on a motorcycle who was trying to figure out where the nearest liquor store was. He was on his way to Statesboro too! I couldn’t help him, but the dog owner did, and he drove off. I said goodbye and headed west.
The traffic today was extremely light, and I was grateful. I rode with my music on for most of the way and sang along loudly. I saw a fox today, and a few dead armadillos. At one point, I was stopped to check my map, and someone shouted out “Hey there!” It was the biker driving by, and I waved to him. I hoped I might run into him when I reached Statesboro.
I began to cross the bridge into Georgia and looked over and saw a wallet on the ground. I picked it up, but it was empty. I was hoping I could return it to someone, but there was no ID. I reached the other side and was so happy to be in Georgia. I couldn’t stop smiling. A woman walking out to her mailbox called out “Good morning!” and I replied with a smile. I was pretty hungry by this time, but there wasn’t anywhere to stop, so I sat on the steps of a church and had a couple of peanut butter cookies and one of my sticks from Vermont Smoke & Cure. I had a couple of choices for my route, and I think I made the right one. I rode into Statesboro, just as my odometer hit 57 miles. The only place around was Chili’s, so I went there for lunch and had the worst, driest chicken I’ve ever had. Yuck.
I went back to the hotel and went for a swim, which was wonderful. Just as I finished, a group of people came in to swim, so it was perfect timing. I had a nice conversation with the bartender about movies, although we didn’t really like the same genres. He was about to move to Wisconsin to be with his girlfriend, and I told him he’d like it there. It was so nice to just sit there and chat, and soon we were joined by a woman who proved to be very entertaining. She ordered a Bloody Mary, and thought it was strange that he put bacon in it. That seems to be a trend though. I told the bartender about my secret Bloody Mary recipe. Maybe I’ll get to demonstrate it in Key West! I do miss cooking too. Cooking has always been one of my favorite things, and it’s hard going this long without it. I’ll have some making up to do.
