Up Around the Bend (Day Forty-nine)

After all the 50-mile days I’ve had lately, I think I’ve earned myself a couple of easy days. Today was only 28 miles, from Walterboro to Yemassee. I followed Google’s directions, which kept me off of 17 for the most part. I lingered in Walterboro, so I wouldn’t get to Yemassee too early. I had a bagel for breakfast and chatted with Chuck on the phone. It was so nice to not have to rush off at the crack of dawn!

I turned right and then took a left which took me down a quiet street for about 7 miles. At some point, Google changed their mind and my route shifted. It told me to take a left on Legend Road. Legend Road is made of SAND. I hesitated. It was only for a mile, so I held my breath and dove in. The sand ended up all over me, but I made it through. I ended up on Highway 21...yes, that’s the same Highway 21 I was unable to find yesterday. It was fine for biking, and actually had the first hills I’ve seen in quite a while. I’m really out of practice and struggled a bit. It was hot, but not as hot as it is in Vermont today! The worst part was the black flies. They are vicious down here! Once they find you, they do not want to let you go. As a result, I didn’t stop much and drank water as I rode.

I made it to 17, my favorite highway, and checked in to the motel at noon. They were so sweet at the front desk and offered to do my laundry for me. I’m relaxing and enjoying this time off. I actually sat and stared at clouds this afternoon, trying to see images in them, which is something I haven’t really done since I was a kid. I can get a late start tomorrow too, since I have an even shorter ride. The next day will be a long one though. 56 miles to Statesboro, Georgia. Hoping I’ll get to see some fireworks somewhere and maybe grab a hotdog. I wish everyone reading this a happy 4th of July. Hope you’re doing something fun with people you love!
